Chinook Park is a South West Calgary Community as annexed by Calgary in 1956, and experienced a significant growth spurt beginning in 1959. This SW Calgary neighbourhood consists mainly of single family homes, and includes a number of small parks. Chinook Park was purposely developed on a traffic-slowing curvilinear street pattern, and contains the pleasantly situated green space, “Chinook Park” at its center. This community borders on the Glenmore Reservoir area to the west and outdoor enthusiasts are in close proximity to boat docks, regional bike paths, the Weaselhead Flats hiking, and Glenmore Park. Commuting from this area is uncomplicated as the neighborhood is roughly 5.7 kilometers south of downtown, and is easily accessed via 14th Street South West.
Chinook Park enjoys two communities that are closely linked to this neighbourhood; Kelvin Grove and Eagle Ridge. Eagle Ridge was established in 1960 and Kelvin Grove during the 1960s. The LRT is nearby as well “Heritage Park”, which is located in Eagle Ridge, and this has proved to be an extremely popular attraction.
Chinook Park Bilingual Elementary school is in the district; as well as a Public High School -Henry Wise Wood High School. The area’s community centre, located next to Henry Wise Wood High School, hosts a variety of programmes which include yoga, karate, highland dancing, wood carving, hockey, soccer, and tennis. The community centre has adjacent ice rinks, and they are paved so they can be enjoyed by inline skaters during the summer. Basketball nets have also been installed.
Although the community has not had a preschool for a number of years due to lack of demand, there are plans to reinstate one in the fall. There are also a number of special events held in the area each year, including the annual Halloween party, a skating party, an evening dinner and dance, and an annual wingding to end the soccer season. The Community Association acts as an advocate for residents, notably regarding traffic issues; however, embraces all happenings that may affect the whole community.
There are homes of all sizes within the boundaries of Chinook Park, Kelvin Grove, and the elite Eagle Ridge which has stately homes, established trees and boulevards, and well kept homes. Residents are proud to be part of these communities.
